Sociability & Greek membership: a university alcohol case study

Includes bibliographical references (pages 70-72)The present study was aimed at investigating the effects of a student???s membership in the Greek system and if being a member of the Greek system is part of the larger idea of sociability as it may relate to their level of college alcohol consumption. Previously researched aspects were also considered, including residency, membership in student campus organizations, and pre-college drinking behaviors. In addition to these predictor variables, demographic variables were also controlled. The study was conducted at a single university in the southwestern region of California. The sample of 683 undergraduate students responded to a 20-question electronic questionnaire sent to a simple random sample of 5000 students chosen from the total campus population. Results showed that sociability proved to be an effective predictor of college alcohol consumption as was high school alcohol consumption levels.
