A construção do sentido nos tratamentos religiosos

The present paper addresses the production of meaning in religious healing. Using ethnographic examples from research among Pentecostals and adepts of Afro-Brazilian religion, it poses three main questions that are held essential for the study of religious healing. The first question deals with the concept of understanding: what do we mean when we affirm that the therapeutic practices promoted by religious groups transform people’s understanding of their affliction? The second develops this issue further, examining the close relation between meaning and the senses in the construction and maintenance of the identity of the healed person: what are the relations between the sensuous experiences cultivated in therapeutic contexts such as healing rituals and the attribution of new meanings for experience? The third question addresses the role of objects in the making of the intersubjective agreements that sustain the transformation of meaning: how are we to understand the participation of material objects in the therapeutic scene?O presente artigo endereça a produção de sentido nos contextos de tratamento religioso. A partir de exemplos etnográficos advindos de pesquisa junto a grupos pentecostais e de candomblé, pretende colocar em pauta três questões cruciais para o entendimento dos processos de comunicação desenrolados nos tratamentos religiosos. A primeira questão diz respeito ao conceito de compreensão: o que queremos dizer quando afirmamos que as práticas terapêuticas promovidas pelo grupo religioso mudam a maneira como os sofredores compreendem seu problema? A segunda explora o entrelaçamento entre sensibilidade e sentido na construção e manutenção da identidade de pessoa sã: que relação há entre as experiências sensíveis vividas e cultivadas em contextos terapêuticos, como rituais de cura, e a construção de novos significados para a aflição? A terceira questão aborda o papel dos objetos na construção dos acordos intersubjetivos que definem e garantem a transformação do sentido: como entender a presença e participação de um conjunto às vezes bastante variado de objetos nos cenários e interações (rituais, encontros) relativas ao tratamento
