Eighth to ninth grade transition workshop for parents in the Los Angeles Unified School District

Includes bibliographical references (pages 27-29)After spending two years as a high school counseling intern, it became\ud increasingly difficult to deny that those students that had consistent parental involvement\ud out performed those that did not by a wide margin. This observation was most clearly\ud demonstrated in the freshmen class following the transition to high school. This graduate\ud project sought to create a workshop for parents inviting them to continue to participate in\ud their student???s academic career. A review of the literature on the developmental period of\ud adolescence, student drop out, transition points, and parental involvement led to the\ud creation of a one day orientation workshop for parents outlining what can be expected of\ud them and their student at the high school level. The graduate project presented here aims\ud to address the need for encouraging parental involvement at the high school level, as\ud parents may be the key to student success
