With annexation of California by the United States in 1848\ud and subsequent immigration, there occurred an inevitable conflict\ud between Hispanic and Anglo agricultural systems. The resultant\ud clash and resolution of differences between these two points of view resulted in a unique landscape reflecting characteristics of\ud both Hispanic and Anglo agriculture. This compromise, however,\ud was not immediate but was a gradual transition in which many new\ud avenues were explored, some accepted and others rejected. The\ud initial stage of transition began shortly before 1850 and continued\ud well into the decade of the 1870's.
