In July, 1929, the California Division of Fish and Game inaugurated an investigation of the Pacific mackerel, Pneumatophorus diego. From the data obtained it was hoped to be able to formulate policies and recommend regulations which would be most suitable for a sustained mackerel fishery at the highest level possible. A knowledge of the age composition of the catch is of extreme importance in a program such as this. The biological range of the species extends from the Gulf of Alaska southward into the Gulf of California. Pacific mackerel are not abundant north of Monterey Bay and those occuring south of Central Baja California are probably not important in our commercial fishery
