Encouraging recycling by businesses will play an important role in diverting waste from landfills. However, little is currently known about the motivations and barriers to recycling for businesses. Qualitative interviews conducted with business owners and managers highlighted structural and relational barriers to recycling, the ways some overcame those barriers, and their reasons for overcoming barriers. Current recycling services do not offer a recycling infrastructure nor promote a recycling culture that assists businesses in the practice of recycling. This research can assist policy decisions on recycling by illuminating the wants, needs, and struggles of businesses with regards to recycling.Sociolog
