Developing Social Skills, Goals, Routines, Social Competence and Self-Efficacy for All Students through the Common Core

The end product for this research project is a Motivational Tool Kit for general education teachers and special education teachers. This tool kit specific purpose is to motivate students from within. Therefore, decreasing behavioral outburst to increase social competence, increases students self-efficacy, and over all improving learning outcomes for students with disabilities. This tool kit incorporates five lesson plans for social skills using Common Core standards with extra resources and continued practice on each skill taught. It offers celebrations rather than rewards, goal progress and exit slips for goal achievement and progress monitoring, and class mottos to promote a community of learners. Students with and without disabilities need to feel like they belong to a community of learners before any academics can be learned, as a result, their teachers need to provide a safe learning environment for them. Student outburst and disruptive behavior express a need thus, teachers and special educators can help students with certain social needs with social stories. These stories provide the child an option rather than a punishment and ultimately teach the child positive behaviors to express their needs.
