Viral infections can induce changes in host metabolism, either as a result of viral manipulations or host anti-viral responses. These metabolic changes in turn may result in various disorders. The liver, as the critical organ in maintaining metabolic homeostasis, is particularly susceptible to such changes during viral infections, and alterations in hepatic function can quickly result in severe metabolic imbalances. Viral infections can even contribute to liver failure by causing tissue damage through cytotoxicity and inflammation, as well as impaired drug metabolism.
