Current available growth factors for cartilage tissue engineering are flawed by significant functional heterogeneity and side effects. A novel growth factor, Nell-1 (Nel1-like molecule-1), has recently been shown to hold promise for successful cartilage regeneration. NFATc2 (Nuclear factor of Activated T-Cells, Cytoplasmic 2) is a primary response gene for Nell-1 and has been shown to play crucial role in pathogenesis of osteoarthritis in mouse model.
