Virus-host dynamics is poorly understood in natural systems, despite known viral influences on host mortality and community structure, food web dynamics, and biogeochemical cycles. Without a universal marker gene for viruses, assessments of viral diversity and dynamics have previously relied upon models and/or low-resolution data, like viral counts or gel electrophoretic estimates of genome size. Here, de novo assemblies were created from 6.4 Gb of metagenomic sequence from eight community viral concentrate samples, collected from 12 hours to three years apart from hypersaline Lake Tyrrell (LT), Victoria, Australia.
