Early life experiences, whether positive or negative, have the potential to enduringly shape the brain. This work investigates two types of early experiences and the mechanisms by which they influence the developing brain: prenatal adversity and developmental prolonged febrile seizures. This work finds that maternal stress and placental corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) are able to influence neuronal development by diminishing dendritic branching, a potential mechanism for the decreased cortical thickness found in children exposed to high levels of CRH in utero.
