Will Assembly Bill 109 be successful in reducing recidivism? A research proposal

Assembly Bill 109, also known as the Public Safety Realignment Act, was enacted in 2011 to reduce prison costs, recidivism, and crime. However, the long-term effects of this regulation remain unknown, specifically if it will be successful in reducing recidivism. The purpose of the proposed study is to provide a method for examining the effectiveness of Assembly Bill 109 as it pertains to rates of crime and recidivism. The race, age, gender, degree of poverty, employment, and education of ex-offenders will be considered so as to determine the basis for their success or failure post-release from prison. In addition, earlier crime and recidivism statistics will be provided so that a longitudinal study may be conducted. The findings from this study, may illustrate that the recidivism component of the Bill requires greater attention. Furthermore, results may contribute to policy and program knowledge regarding how to achieve ex-offender reentry and rehabilitative success
