Assembly Bill 109, also known as the Public Safety Realignment Act, was enacted in 2011 to reduce prison costs, recidivism, and crime. However, the long-term effects of this regulation remain unknown, specifically if it will be successful in reducing recidivism. The purpose of the proposed study is to provide a method for examining the effectiveness of Assembly Bill 109 as it pertains to rates of crime and recidivism. The race, age, gender, degree of poverty, employment, and education of ex-offenders will be considered so as to determine the basis for their success or failure post-release from prison.
