Expression of the recombination activating genes Rag1 and Rag2 (Rag) is essential for generation of a diverse B cell antigen receptor repertoire necessary for effective adaptive immune responses. The Rag genes are among the first lineage-specific genes expressed in lymphocyte progenitors, and their expression strongly correlates with commitment to the B lineage.
