In this dissertation, I study the effects of policies introduced by less-advanced economies to draw on the benefits of globalization. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on the impacts of foreign multinationals that open affiliates in Costa Rica on the performance of local firms and wages of local workers. These two chapters bring novel evidence to the continued debate on the generous policies governments use to compete over multinationals. Chapter 4 studies an industrial policy implemented in Romania to spur the development of the information technology (IT) sector.
