The diffusion approximation to the Boltzmann transport equation is commonly used to analyze data obtained from biomedical optical diagnostic techniques. Unfortunately, this approximation has significant limitations to accurately predict radiative transport in turbid media, which constrains its applicability to highly scattering systems.
