Purpose of the Study:\ud The lack of dating techniques for and ethnographic\ud information about petroglyphs has usually led to their\ud exclusion from analyses because they cannot be dated, and\ud therefore, cannot be linked to a cultural sequence. In\ud addition, the petroglyphs in the southern North Coast Ranges\ud have two other attributes which have confounded researchers.\ud These factors are the limited number of sites, and the\ud simplicity and abstract nature of the petroglyph elements.\ud Paradoxically, petroglyphs are one of the few preserved\ud artifacts that have the potential to provide researchers\ud with data about the ideological aspects of prehistoric\ud cultures.
