This thesis is a study in cultural landscape focused on Ballard, Washington, a "neighborhood community" of Seattle. The author's research was\ud designed to answer three questions, first: How Norwegian is Ballard and how do I know that? Second: How is Ballard Norwegian, and how does the Norwegian community retain its identity within the larger heterogeneous community? Finally, of what importance is this cultural persistence to the Seattle area? The author's research was carried out between 1989 and 1991, and included fieldwork in the community of Ballard
