[EN] In the present invention, we show for the first time that the supply of phytoene to feed the carotenoid pathway functions as a primary determinant of chromoplast biogenesis in green tissues. We provide evidence that exceeding a threshold level of phytoene, the first committed intermediate of the carotenoid pathway, is sufficient to induce chloroplast-to-chromoplast differentiation in leaves.
