This performance and report presents and examines choral settings of three texts, O magnum mysterium, Ther is no rose of swych virtu, and Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. The original settings of each will be compared with contemporary choral compositions, giving particular attention to melodic and harmonic elements of the archetypal compositions. With an emphasis on the mystery of Christ's birth, these settings will be studied with regard to style analysis. The significance of the iconography of the rose will also be examined. Textual, melodic, and harmonic implications will also be considered, including the musical structure of the melodic lines and accompanying instruments and vocal parts.
