In 1977, eight poplar hybrid zones were studied, comprising two native Californian species,<italic> Populus fremontii</italic> and <italic>P. trichocarpa</italic>, and the European exotic, <italic>Populus nigra</italic>, which is commonly planted as an ornamental.
