Global inclusion: encouraging global citizenship among at-risk minority youth through education and service learning abroad

Communication, collaboration, and an understanding of multiple perspectives are fundamental to advancing in the 21st century. In spite of this, many American youth, especially those from minority or low income backgrounds, are not being taught the requisite skills and knowledge needed to guide them in the global age. Exposing students to international education and service abroad at the secondary school level will familiarize students to the competencies essential for success in the global era. Furthermore, increasing student's global awareness will assist in developing their critical thinking and interpersonal skills, empowering them to become active citizens involved in matters of local and global significance
