To have the opportunity to speak in honour of Dr. M.N. Srinivas is itself a great honour. Dr. M.N. Srinivas was a scholar of the first water. two generations of social scientists were weaned on his writings. Concepts that he introduced entered the vocabulary of academia. Ever so many remember him for his sterling personal qualities. It is therefore entirely in the fitness of things that the institution that he adorned for seven years honours his memory through this series of Lectures. It is one of my lasting regrets that I never got the chance to meet Dr. M.N. Srinivas personally.
