Tornar-se professor do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico: Um estudo sobre o início da carreira docente

This study focuses on professional paths of primary school teachers at the beginning of their careers. It intends to investigate the conceptual representations of newly formed teachers about their first years of teaching, to identify some variables that may contribute to the professional integration of these young teachers; to understand how they experience becoming a teacher; and, finally, to assess their degree of commitment to the teaching career. The theoretical framework of reference is based on review of literature on teacher’s socialization, particularly the early-career teacher. Methodologically, it builds up on a descriptive and interpretative approach, using individuals’ biographical narratives, and case studies as a research strategy.  The article is structured in two parts: (I) the literature review and (II) the presentation of the methodology and conclusions of the study. In the review of the literature, we highlight studies about the beginning of the career, socialization, being a teacher, training and professional life cycles. In the study carried out, we highlight the techniques, instruments and strategies defined, and then present the most evident conclusions in the frame of reference presented in the first part.Este estudo centra-se nos percursos profissionais de professores do 1° Ciclo do Ensino Básico em início de carreira. Com ele pretendemos investigar as representações de professores recém-formados sobre os seus primeiros anos de exercício letivo; identificar algumas variáveis que podem contribuir para a inserção profissional destes jovens professores; compreender como eles vivenciam o tornar-se professor; e, finalmente, conhecer o grau de compromisso com a carreira docente. O quadro teórico de referência do estudo efetuado assenta numa revisão da literatura sobre a socialização do professor, particularmente do professor em início de carreira; metodologicamente, tem por base um paradigma interpretativo e descritivo, com recurso a abordagens narrativo-biográficas, e o estudo de caso como estratégia investigativa, numa dimensão longitudinal. O artigo estrutura-se em duas partes: (I) revisão da literatura e (II) apresentação da metodologia e das conclusões do estudo realizado. Na revisão da literatura, destacamos estudos sobre o início da carreira, a socialização, ser professor, formação e ciclos de vida profissional. No estudo realizado, destacamos as técnicas, instrumentos e estratégias definidas, para depois apresentarmos as conclusões mais evidentes, no quadro de referência apresentado na primeira parte
