The dynamics of a medieval town : – urbanity, social practice and material culture in Uppsala, Sweden, 1100–1550 AD

Avhandlingen utforskar arkeologiska källor till sociala praktiker och materiell kultur i det medeltida Uppsala. Ett stort antal föremål som insamlats vid tio av stadens större undersökningar mellan 1975 och 2000 har bearbetats i avhandlingen. Fyndmaterialet ger nya ingångar till förändringar i det urbana rummet och till invånarnas skiftande sociala identiteter. Den materiellakulturen ligger även till grund för en vidare diskussion om centralabegrepp och problem inom historisk arkeologi och stadsarkeologi. Genom ett föreslaget föremålsintegrerat och handlingsteoretiskt perspektivpå urbanisering, urbanism och urbanitet kan via den metod som presenterasi avhandlingen både nya och äldre undersökningsmaterial aktiveras. Därigenom kan också ett mer dynamiskt stadsarkeologiskt narrativ skapas om de medeltida städerna som särskilda rum, mötesplatser och livsmiljöer.This dissertation explores changes in urban space, social practices and material signatures of medieval households. Comparative analysis of a large archaeological assemblage, collected from ten major excavations conducted between 1975 and 2000 in the town of Uppsala, provides new insights in urban material culture, social topography and urban processes of the medieval period, both within the context of the town as well as in the broader townscape. The assemblages of material culture and their spatial and chronological distribution forms the basis for further discussionon central topics and debates in Scandinavian historical and urban archeology, including the concept of urbanity (‘urbanitet’), materiality and social identities. By using an object-centered, interpretative and comparative methodological framework that focuses on household consumption, urban spaces, actors and social practices, different social identities in the town can be traced. Combining the tools of social practice theory, frequency seriation and correspondence analysis for mapping change and variability in the urban material culture leads to a deeper and more dynamic archeologicalnarrative of everyday life in the medieval towns
