This paper re-examines the reforms of the Kumamoto Domain in the third year of the Meiji Restoration period (hereafter: the year-three reforms), which are well known as an archetypal example of domain reforms that occurred from the Meiji Restoration period to the mid-1950s. The paper begins with a thorough review of previous studies; this literature review confirms that the research perspectives on the year-three reforms have broadened since the 1980s. At that time, social and regional histories became mainstream. Furthermore, this paper argues that it is necessary to conduct a political reexamination of the year-three reforms while using the results of previous research.
