A Comparative Study on Japanese and Korean Aquaculture -6

This paper is a comparative study focusing on Japanese flounder culture business between Korea and Japan. The major aspects covered in this paper are as follows: 1) The Japanese flounder culture business, status quo, its business conditions in two countries; 2) The major factors that result in significant difference in management conditions and profitability of Japanese flounder culture business between the countries. The result of this study shows that the Japanese flounder production forms a significant portion of total aquaculture in Korea, while its proportion in Japan is relatively low. The major factors that affect the profitability of Japanese flounder culture business in Korea are as follows: 1) The fish production cost per kilogram is 12,594 wons. 2) The ROI (rate of increase) of the business is 170.4%. 3) The break-even point in terms of volume is 13,466kg. 4) At the break-even-volume, the portion of fixed cost is 68% and variable cost is 32%. However, for the analysis of the major factors affecting the profitability of Japanese flounder culture business in Japan, it is difficult to set up a model farm comparable to that of the Korean one.
