Almost all of the precipitation in the Tropics is caused by or linked with atmospheric deep convection, and it also contributes significantly to the summer-time precipitation in the midlatitudes. Deep convection is often associated with hazardous weather, including thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes. On a global scale, deep convection produces most of the precipitation on Earth, affects large-scale weather and climate patterns and transfers water vapor and heat to the upper troposphere. The physical mechanisms in deep convection, especially those responsible for its sensitivity to low-to-midtropospheric moisture, need to be understood in order to produce realistic weather and climate forecasts.
