THE USE OF ICE BREAKING ACTIVITIES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN BOLA SUMANGE PRIVATE ENGLISH COURSE

The desire to learn English can be increased through the ice-breaking technique. The ice-breaking method is one of the activities that can eliminate students' boredom in education, an exciting approach for students because the activity is playing games while learning. The aims of this study were (1) to determine the type of ice breaking do the English teachers use at Bola' Sumange Private English Course in teaching English. (2) to determine students' perceptions of ice breaking activities in learning English in the classroom. This study uses interviews and survey. The research subjects consisted of 20 level 2 students in the Bola' Sumange Private English Course and 1 English teacher. Based on the results of the study, it was found that there were three types of ice breaking activities used by the teacher to get a good response from students, namely singing, yelling and games. It can be seen from the results of interviews that students are more enthusiastic in learning after ice breaking is applied in the learning process. In addition, students' perceptions of the use of ice breaker generally stated that the use of ice breaker was very good, especially in order to increase students' interest in learning English. However, teachers still need higher mastery in using ice breaking to better assist students in increasing students' confidence in the English learning process
