8th SEMESTER STUDENTS PERCEPTION TOWARD GOOGLE CLASSROOM AS A MEDIA OF ONLINE LEARNING IN ELED UMM

ABSTRACT Google Classroom is one application that teachers and students widely used as an online learning medium. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where almost all learning activities are daring. This study aimed to determine student perceptions of the use of Google Classroom in online learning at the English Language Education Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. At the same time, this research focuses on three aspects of perception investigated: satisfaction, student understanding, and positive and negative impact of google classroom in online learning. This study used a mixed-method which data was collected from questionnaires and interviews. The researcher used quantitative research to find out the percentage of student's perceptions about the use of google classroom. While qualitative research was used to describe the students ' conducted to get deeper information. The respondents were the English Department students of University Muhammadiyah Malang, the academic year 2017. The researcher took 15-20% of the total population using convenience sampling, 40 respondents who had filled out the questionnaire. From the questionnaire answers, the researchers found six respondents who had up normality answers to be interviewed. Based on the finding, the researcher found three results from all aspects. The first aspect is that students are very satisfied with Google Classroom as an online learning medium because the features of google classroom have are very appropriate to use. The second aspect is that students feel positive and negative impacts when using google classroom. The positive impact that can be obtained is that learning to use google classroom is more flexible. Besides, those students are easier to receive and send materials. Google Classroom can also be connected directly to several platforms such as Google Docs, Google Forms, Etc. While the negative impact that can be obtained is that students feel lazy to review the material, can break focus, and google classroom lacks interaction. The last aspect is understanding. The researcher found that Google Classroom affected understanding because the material provided was more precise and easier to understand if the lecturer's teaching was proper by controlling the course of teaching and learning activities
