PRE-SERVICE TEACHER ON RECOGNIZING IDENTITY: A NARRATIVE INQUIRY OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AS FUTURE ENGLISH TEACHER THESIS

As teacher candidates, pre-service teacher are required to form their identity as pre-service teachers. A pre-service teacher must have a lot of experience and higher education while at university. Along with their studying period in university, teaching practice is also significant in developing pre-service teacher identity. Teaching gives pre-service teachers real experiences of working in real schools. From teaching practice, the pre-service teacher can judge themself. In this study, the purpose of this research is to find out how students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang develop pre-service teacher identity and to know the factors that support and hinder pre-service teacher identity formation when implementing an internship program 3. The research methods used were interview and document analysis. The subjects of the study consisted of four students of the English Education Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang, 2017 academic year, who had completed the internship program 3. Based on the results of the study, the respondents showed how they shaped their identities, such as through personality, adult attachment, emotional state and effective teacher-student interaction. Interestingly, the four respondents showed almost the same identity, they want to try to be open teacher and try to make a good communication to and between students. The factors that hinder and support the formation of pre-service teacher identity are intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The implication of this research is that in shaping pre-service teacher identity, there must be a support system, especially support from other teachers and supports from the school and college
