LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGY USED BY THAI STUDENTS IN LEARNING INDONESIAN AND ENGLISH AT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

Language learning strategies are specific actions, steps, behaviors or techniques used by students to enhance their own learning which can be varied because each student chooses and uses different strategies depending on teaching variables. This research aims to determine the Indonesian and English learning strategies applied by Thai students. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects for this research were four Thai students majoring in English Language Education Department, Development Economics Department, and International Relations Department. Data were collected through a questionnaire filled out by four participants and one participant filled in the interview in the form of narrative inquiry to find out the language strategies used from the participants' experiences. The purpose of this interview is to obtain more in-depth information about the use of language learning strategies that cannot be checked with just a questionnaire. This research found that the learning strategies used by Thai students used social strategies as well as affective strategies in their learning plans. It is shows by their tendency in asking their friends for learning the words and encouraging themself to learn the target language in places that could make them concentrate.
