A STUDY OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION IN TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS FOR ENGLISH CLASS AT SMAN 1 GONDANGWETAN PASURUAN

ABSTRACT Communication is an important thing and is always used in daily life. As social beings, people cannot stop to communicate with other people. One type of communication that is often used is interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication is a communication that provides feedback or impact to the communicant either face to face or through the media. This communication can be used in education environment. Especially, in language teaching and learning process, interpersonal communication is needed to make the activity goes well. The purpose of this study are to explore the expression that used in interpersonal communication for teaching learning process, find out the teachers’ difficulties of interpersonal communication in teaching learning process in the classroom, and elaborate the solution that used for deal the teachers’ difficulties of interpersonal communication in teaching learning process. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. Then the study involved three teachers at SMAN 1 Gondangwetan Pasuruan who competent in teaching English and already got certificate for teaching. For the instrument, this study used semi-structural interview and document analysis through LKPD (Lembar Kerja Perserta Didik) and RPP (Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran). This study showed that there were five expression of interpersonal communication used by teachers included for greeting, compliment, checking students’ understanding, giving motivation, and asking students (in bad condition). Meanwhile, the students used expression based on the lesson plan “talking about self” and students’ worksheet. In communication with students, all teachers had difficulties such as the messages not received properly, getting the students’ responses, and making students speak up in the classroom. However, the teachers used some strategies to solve the difficulties with gesture, mixing the languages, using easy vocabulary, interesting learning method, giving rewards for student, and using technology
