One of the most fascinating properties of the brain is synaptic plasticity, which may be defined as activi-ty-dependent modifications of structure and efficacy of synapses. Synaptic plasticity is believed to be the cellular basis of learning and memory. One of the mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity is fusion of glutamate receptor-containing vesicles with the postsynaptic membrane. However, the underpinnings of postsynaptic vesicle exocytosis are poorly understood. SNAREs are proteins that mediate membrane fusion.
