Use of Social Media for Research and Scholarly Research Outputs of Librarians in Two Universities in Enugu State

xi The study investigated the use of social media for research by librarians in two universities in Enugu State. Survey research design was adopted for the study while population of the study consists of all the 97 librarians in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Enugu State University of Science and Technology. Sample for the study include all the 97librarians hence purposive sampling technique was adopted. Instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire made up of five clusters derived from the research questions. Out of the 97 questionnaires distributed, 93 (90.2%) useful copies were returned. Data was analyzed using frequency tables, mean and standard deviation. Major findings include high extent on the use of social media for research. Moreover, on the quantity of librarians’ research outputs, only 45.7% of the respondents achieved the minimum scholarly journal publication requirements expected in six years while 54.2% did not. Many challenges on the use of social media for research were reported among which include lack of knowledge and skills, inadequate electricity and internet connectivity and difficulty in recruiting participants during data collection. Based on the findings it was recommended among others that the university management should encourage and support the use of social media by providing the necessary tools and facilities including adequate power supply and internet connectivity while the library should organize regular training on the use of different social media platforms for research to encourage librarians and other academic staff
