Set in Nazi Germany, The Book Thief (2005), by Australian author Markus Zusak, immerses the reader in the vibrant and tricky journey undertaken by a German girl, Liesel Meminger, towards trauma recovery. By portraying characters that go beyond the typical Jew victim –also present in the story– Zusak encourages readers to approach this Holocaust novel, narrated by Death himself, from a different perspective, which I relate in my analysis to the importance of listening to the perpetrator side of the story.
