As a senior at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, she became Miss Arkansas 1964, and a month later, was crowned Miss America 1964. She earned degrees in speech and drama at the University of Arkansas and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Later, she became an active civic leader and was part the original group working to restore Old Main in 1986. Among other awards and honors, in 1988 she received a Citation of Distinguished Alumni Award from the U of A Alumni Association. The Donna Axum Fitness Center, opened in 2003 in the U of A’s HPER Building, was dedicated to honor her
