Corporate governance literature describes three primary roles of the board of directors--control, advise/counsel, and strategy--but the board's strategic role has largely been ignored by researchers. This study focuses on the implications of such a role, and how it may be significantly influenced by the process of selecting directors and by multiple board memberships, commonly referred to as "interlocks". A research project is described, in which a survey of directors of publicly-traded and privately-held companies offers new insights into the board's strategic role.U of I OnlyETDs are only available to UIUC Users without author permissio
