This thesis concerns the difficult process by which what I term alternative popular musics form and survive, and the social significance of their activities. By alternative I mean those practices which construct themselves as distinct from and at times oppositional to mainstream musical practices by defining themselves through musical, institutional and social difference. The thesis thus focuses upon the processes of the articulation of differences such as race, class, sexuality, taste, and many other social categories in popular musical practice.The specific questions that are considered are: How are alternative musical practices formed, and how are they able to survive within political economic structures that clearly favor the music prod...
