Throughout this paper the possible impact of religion on economic development, specifically on the HDI is evaluated at an empirical level from theoretical discussions. The relationship between religion and development has not been studied empirically, and this research aims to partially cover this shortcoming. With this purpose we use data from an international panel in the period 1990-2005, using three-stage least squares. The results support the thesis that religion has an impact on economic development, but the specific religious belief has different effects.
