Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for periodontitis in HIV+ patients. Methods: 152 HIV+ patients were recruited. Clinical measurements, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and plaque samples were taken from 8 sites of each patient at baseline and 6-month visits. GCF elastase was determined by measurement of p-Nitroanalide resulting from hydrolysis of a specific peptide. GCF b-glucuronidase (bG) was determined by release of 4-methylumbelliferone from hydrolysis of a specific substrate. An immunoassay was used to detect bacteria in plaque samples.
