The Strategies And Ideology Of Idiom TranslationIn A Novel Of Diari Si Bocah Tengil: Orang Ketiga (Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel)

This research aims at analyzing the strategies and ideologies of idiomstranslation that found in the novel Diari si Bocah Tengil: Orang Ketiga (Diary of aWimpy Kid: The Third Wheel) qualitatively. The method of this research isdiscourse analysis. The compiled data were analyzed by using the concept of Bakerof idiom translation strategies by identifying English idioms which had alreadyexisted in the novel. Furthermore, the researcher analyzed the data by using theconcept of translation ideology proposed by Venuti. Moreover, the researcher alsoconducted an interview with the translator of the novel, Maria Lubis, as anadditional data to give some reasons of hers while translating English idiom intoIndonesian language. Results indicated that Maria Lubis, used all four strategies ofidiom translation proposed by Baker and the most used strategies is translationidiom by paraphrase. Moreover, the use of strategies of idiom translation is helpfulfor the researcher to analyze translation ideology. Thus, this research concludes thatthe application of translation idiom strategy proposed by Baker helped theresearcher to examine the ideology of Maria Lubis while translating the selecteddata. Then, it shows that Maria Lubis is prevailing the target culture whiletranslating the idioms.
