Epilepsy occurrence in people older than 65 years

Iako je epilepsija jedan od najčešćih neuroloških poremećaja na svijetu, još se uvijek istražuje kako je pravilno dijagnosticirati i izliječiti. Dijagnostika i liječenje epilepsije veoma je dugotrajan i kompliciran proces te nikad nije jednak; cijelom procesu treba pristupiti individualno i obratiti pozornost na općenito zdravstveno stanje i moguće druge komorbiditete bolesne osobe. Budući da se ljudski vijek produžuje te da svjetska populacija sve više stari, samim time se povećava i broj starijih osoba koje su oboljele od neke bolesti pa tako i od epilepsije. Stoga je osobito potrebno istražiti pojavnost epilepsije kod osoba starijih od 65 godina te specifičnosti bolesti koje se pojavljuju u toj dobi. Prvi se dio ovog rada temelji na općim informacijama o epilepsiji koje su dosad istražene i poznate; definicija i epidemiologija epilepsije, epileptični napadaji, uzroci i klasifikacija epilepsije, dijagnoza i liječenje epilepsije. Drugi i središnji dio rada posvećen je specifičnostima epilepsije kod ljudi starijih od 65 godina te izazovima koji se pojavljuju pri dijagnozi i liječenju epilepsije. Budući da ti procesi nisu jednaki u mlađoj i u starijoj dobi, postoje određene prepreke i problemi koje tek treba dodatno istražiti.Even though epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders in the world, it is still necessary to examine how to properly diagnose and treat it. Diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy is extremely time-consuming and complicated process which is never the same; the whole process should be approached individually, and with attention to the patient’s general health condition and other possible comorbidities. As human life expectancy increases and the world's population ages, so does the number of older people who suffer from certain diseases, including epilepsy. Therefore, it is especially necessary to investigate the incidence of epilepsy in persons older than 65, as well as the specificity of the disease that occurs at that age. The first part of this paper deals with general epilepsy information that has been researched and known so far; definition and epidemiology of epilepsy, epileptic seizures, causes and classification of epilepsy, diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. The second and central part of the paper is dedicated to the specifics of epilepsy with people over 65 and the challenges that arise in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. Since these processes are not the same with young and old, there are certain obstacles and problems that need to be further investigated
