Iako je epilepsija jedan od najčešćih neuroloških poremećaja na svijetu, još se uvijek istražuje kako je pravilno dijagnosticirati i izliječiti. Dijagnostika i liječenje epilepsije veoma je dugotrajan i kompliciran proces te nikad nije jednak; cijelom procesu treba pristupiti individualno i obratiti pozornost na općenito zdravstveno stanje i moguće druge komorbiditete bolesne osobe. Budući da se ljudski vijek produžuje te da svjetska populacija sve više stari, samim time se povećava i broj starijih osoba koje su oboljele od neke bolesti pa tako i od epilepsije.
