A trade war is a somewhat protectionist method of controlling international trade. It happens for various reasons, as a battle between countries which involves one or more sectors of trade. This is not the first war of economic nature in history, and from the past cases it is obvious that the main goal of every war like this is to keep or gain more competitiveness in the market. In the case of USA and China, it began as an American attempt to reduce trade balance deficit they had with their „enemy “. China and the USA today are the two biggest and most influential economies in the world. With China being the leader in international export and producer, and the USA setting world economy trends as a wholesale trader, it is no surprise that the two giants would eventually collide and feel threatened with one another. Events which followed are a perfect example of how wars are fought in modern times. It could be considered a battle of the minds, or a battle for power, with the main weapon being the input of tariffs on products imported from (produced by) the opponent. The peak was reached when Donald Trump was president of the United States in 2018, as he wanted to prove to China that The US are a greater nation than the Chinese, for which the Chinese always had a prepared answer. From the beginning and initial accusations to the imposition of first tariffs and taking the opening strike at the opponent, this war had an interesting turn of events. The main thesis of this paper is the analysis of sectors which were hit by the tariffs and how the trade changes between the two and with their other partners. The analysis is carried out in the period from 2017 until 2020, since the war flared in 2018. Analysis conducted in this period shows the US-China relationship slightly before and after the main events
