The Paleozoic bryozoan Order Cryptostomata has traditionally included the bifoliate, rhabdomesid, ans fenestellid Bryozoa. Over the past fifteen years a trend toward subdivision of this order has taken place with the recognition of an Order Fenestrata for the fenestellids and an Order Rhabdomesonata for the rhabdomesids leaving the bifoliates, the Ptilodictyoidea, as the only major group in the Cryptostomata. The stratigraphically early cryptostome Family Arthrostylidae displays many important morphological features in common with all three cryptostome lineages and serves to unify these lineages into a single phylogenetic entity.
