Hélinand of Froidmont and Cistercian Preaching in the Midi, 1145-1229. During the second half of the twelfth century and the first quarter of the thirteenth, a series of Cistercian monks -preachers, legates, bishops and archbishops -dedicated themselves to the campaign against heresy. Hélinand, a former poet who entered the monastery of Froidmont in the diocese of Beauvais, should be included among the Cistercians referred to as the « clerics of the Crusade ». This study of Hélinand is organized around four principal questions concerning Hélinand ’s biography, his preaching in the Midi, the textual evidence for this preaching, and the attention given to heresy in his other works.
