Hélinand de Froidmont et la prédication cistercienne dans le Midi (1145-1229)

Hélinand of Froidmont and Cistercian Preaching in the Midi, 1145-1229. During the second half of the twelfth century and the first quarter of the thirteenth, a series of Cistercian monks -preachers, legates, bishops and archbishops -dedicated themselves to the campaign against heresy. Hélinand, a former poet who entered the monastery of Froidmont in the diocese of Beauvais, should be included among the Cistercians referred to as the « clerics of the Crusade ». This study of Hélinand is organized around four principal questions concerning Hélinand ’s biography, his preaching in the Midi, the textual evidence for this preaching, and the attention given to heresy in his other works. Ties between the Beauvais region and the campaign against heresy are underscored, as are connection between Hélinand and the circle of Peter the Chanter.Hélinand de Froidmont et la prédication cistercienne dans le Midi (1145-1229). Pendant la seconde moitié du douzième siècle et le premier quart du treizième, toute une succession de moines cisterciens -prédicateurs, légats, évêques et archevêques -se consacrèrent à la campagne contre l’hérésie. Hélinand, ancien trouvère devenu moine à l’abbaye beauvai-sienne de Froidmont, doit être compté parmi ces « clercs de la croisade ». Cette étude sur Hélinand s’organise autour de quatre questions principales concernant la biographie d’Hélinand, sa prédication dans le Midi, l’évidence textuelle de cette prédication, et les mentions de l’hétérodoxie dans ses autres œuvres.
