Les Strigiformes (Aves) des phosphorites du Quercy (France) : systématique, biostratigraphie et paléobiogéographie

Most of the Strigiformes from Quercy belong to the genus Necrobyas, previously known only by tibiotarsi and tarsometatarsi. The revision of the whole material made it possible to find the other elements of the pectoral girdle and limbs of this genus. These elements share many similarities with the family Tytonidae. Most of them are nearer to Tytoninae, but the distal part of the tibiotarsus is more similar to Phodilinae. Necrobyas represents a kind of owl that is not very different from the recent Tyto, but with a shorter and heavier tarsometatarsus. In this genus, the succession of four species, N. rossignoli, N. harpax, N. edwardsi, and N. arvernensis, from the Upper Eocene to the Lower Miocene, can be observed. The general trend in this lineage is an increase in size and a lengthening of the tarsometatarsus. The other Strigiformes from Quercy, Bubo incertus and Asio henrici, are transferred to the new genera Nocturnavis and Selenornis. Three other genera are described from previously unstudied material : Palaeobyas, Palaeotyto, and Palaeoglaux. These five genera, as well as Necrobyas, are ascribed to the family Tytonidae. Moreover, there is another new genus, Sophiornis, representing a new family, Sophiornithidae. These owls are different from the two extinct families, Ogygoptyngidae and Protostrigidae, described in the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene of North America and Europe. The Quercy documents show that the family Tytonidae was highly diversified in the Paleogene of Europe, while it is now restricted to only two genera, Tyto, the Barn Owl, and Phodilus, the Bay Owl. These Tytonidae have probably been superseded by the Strigidae which appeared, as far as we know, in the Lower Miocene.La plupart des Strigiformes du Quercy appartiennent au genre Necrobyas qui était connu précédemment par des tibiotarses et des tarsométatarses. La révision de l'ensemble du matériel a permis de retrouver les autres éléments du squelette appendiculaire de ce genre. L'ensemble du squelette offre des ressemblances avec celui de la famille des Tytonidae. La plupart des éléments sont plus proches des Tytoninae mais la partie distale du tibiotarse est plus proche des Phodilinae. Le genre Necrobyas représente une forme assez proche du genre Tyto mais avec un tarsométatarse court et massif. On observe dans ce genre la succession de quatre espèces, N. rossignoli, N. harpax, N. edwardsi et N. arvernensis, de l'Éocène supérieur au Miocène inférieur. Cette lignée est caractérisée par l'augmentation de la taille et l'allongement progressif du tarsométatarse. Les autres Strigiformes du Quercy, Bubo incertus et Asio henrici, sont transférés dans des genres nouveaux : Nocturnavis et Selenornis. Trois autres genres sont décrits à partir de matériel inédit : Palaeobyas, Palaeotyto et Palaeoglaux. Comme Necrobyas ces genres sont classés dans la famille des Tytonidae. On trouve en outre un autre genre nouveau, Sophiornis, représentant une nouvelle famille, les Sophiornithidae. Ces Strigiformes sont différents des deux familles éteintes, Ogygoptyngidae et Protostrigidae, décrites dans le Paléocène, l'Éocène et l'Oligocène d'Amérique du Nord et d'Europe. Le matériel du Quercy montre que la famille des Tytonidae était fortement diversifiée durant le Paléogène d'Europe, alors qu'elle n'est plus représentée actuellement que par les deux genres Tyto et Phodilus. Ces formes ont probablement été supplantées par les Strigidae qui apparaissent au Miocène inférieur.Mourer-Chauviré Cécile.
