The prehistory of the Philippines is still poorly known because it rests on data which are difficult to interpret. One issue is the dating of the first human settlements in the archipelago. Assumptions concerning the presence of Man as early as Pleistocene are based on stone industries (Cabalwanian and Acheulean) discovered from the stratigraphie context. However, according to current data, Homo sapiens sapiens would have reached the archipelago from the South at least 40,000 years ago. Human fossils, together with several lithic industries discovered on the islands of Palawan, Samar and in the north of Luzon, attest to it.
