The Caune de l’Arago has 15 meter thick deposits, dated to between 700 000 and 100 000 years ago. The cave is an exceptional site for the observation and description of divers behaviour of hunters during the Lower Palaeolithic, throughout the entire Middle Pleistocene. Three stratigraphic units have been identified : ensemble I dated between 580 000 and 520 000 years, ensemble II dated between 520 000 and 480 000 years and ensemble III dated between 480 000 and 400 000 years.
