In Arakan, a western state of contemporary Burma and an ancient Buddhist kingdom, shamans who perform in nat spirit cults sing incantations summoning the spirits for their help. Such chants belong to a rich although little-known oral tradition. In this paper, I analyse of one of these incantations and show that it makes reference to an indigenous conception of space, in the sense that this space is built through the ritual practices of a particular society. The performance of the incantation conjures up a mental map or “ ritual geography” of Arakan.
