Burmese identity is intrinsically linked to Theravada Buddhism, and in this paper the author questions the role played by the cult of the Thirty-Seven Lords in the emergence of such a hegemonic identity. The processes that led to the elaboration of the cult of the Thirty-Seven Lords are still active and an analysis of them shows that this cult actually constitutes a burmanization device that draws its authority from its reference to Buddhist kingship. The way such a burmanization device operates is demonstrated here through the analysis of the incorporation of a Kahte cult in the Burmese cult of the Lady with the Golden Sides in Myittu, as performed by spirit mediums who are adepts of the cult of the Thirty-Seven Lords.
