De l’élaboration de l’identité birmane comme hégémonie à travers le culte birman des Trente-sept Seigneurs

Burmese identity is intrinsically linked to Theravada Buddhism, and in this paper the author questions the role played by the cult of the Thirty-Seven Lords in the emergence of such a hegemonic identity. The processes that led to the elaboration of the cult of the Thirty-Seven Lords are still active and an analysis of them shows that this cult actually constitutes a burmanization device that draws its authority from its reference to Buddhist kingship. The way such a burmanization device operates is demonstrated here through the analysis of the incorporation of a Kahte cult in the Burmese cult of the Lady with the Golden Sides in Myittu, as performed by spirit mediums who are adepts of the cult of the Thirty-Seven Lords. The relegation of the original Kahte cult to the depreciative rank of a “ local tradition” allows Burmese spirit mediums to pose as defenders of Burmese Buddhist culture ; at the same time, Kahte collective memory is deprived of its content and reduced to the status of a mere “ local root.” The cult to the Thirty-Seven Lords thus emerges from pluralistic identity constituents to form a higher identity level originating in the hierarchization of these constituents. In the same way, “ burmeseness” is built on the difference between central identity and pluralistic identities relying on Buddhist authority within a common “ social space.”L’identité birmane est intrinsèquement liée au bouddhisme du Theravāda. Cependant, on s’interrogera plutôt ici sur la part du culte des Trente-sept Seigneurs dans l’émergence de cette identité hégémonique. L’analyse des processus, toujours actifs, de formation de ce culte montre qu’il constitue un dispositif de birmanisation dont l’autorité repose sur la référence à la royauté bouddhique. La manière dont la birmanisation opère dans ce contexte est examinée à partir du cas de l’incorporation d’un culte kethè (nom birman des Manipuri déplacés en Birmanie à la fin du XVIIIe siècle) dans le culte birman de la Dame aux flancs d’or célébré par les médiums du culte des Trente-sept Seigneurs, à Myittu. La localisation et la stigmatisation du culte d’origine en tant que «tradition » permettent aux médiums birmans d’apparaître comme les tenants de la culture birmane bouddhique. En contrepoint, la mémoire collective des Kethè est vidée de son contenu et réduite à l’idée d’une origine. Le culte des Trente-sept Seigneurs émerge ainsi de contenus identitaires pluriels et constitue quant à lui un niveau identitaire supérieur procédant de la hiérarchisation de ces autres identités. De la même manière, la «birmanité » est construite sur l’écart entre une identité centrale et des identités plurielles, un écart qui se fonde, au sein d’un même «espace social » , sur l’autorité du bouddhisme.Brac de la Perrière Bénédicte.
